![]() ![]() The Boanerges has a great load of bombs, but it stinks in pretty much every other respect. I think I'm coming back up on the first mission where they have you disarm the first big shivan ship.Īnd, is it just me, or is there really only one bomber to fly? Every attempt with the Boanerges or whatever it is ends in disaster, and the one with the turret seems to be the only one I don't just explode in. Hell, replaying it with the fan HD mod doesn't even really capture it. Nothing has re-created the feeling of flying between two enormous capital ships as they duke it out with lasers that completely dwarf your fighter. Oh and extra credits for clearly being a big influence on Mass Effect, ME1 being another of those all time greats for me. Seriously, anyone with even a passing interest in space action games should play it, especially considering the SCP version keeps all the good parts about the original and just brings some of technical aspects up to speed a bit as far as modern systems go. Just writing this post Robert Loggia reading mission briefings starts playing in my head. ![]() I really can't think of anything bad to say about it, its graphics were amazing at the time, sound design was fucking amazing, great music, voice acting, story, it's the whole package. One of those very rare sequels that was IMO better than its predecessor in every way, and FreeSpace 1 was still a great game to begin with. I don't do top 10 list (or any other arbitrary number for that matter) of things like games, music etc, I just have my games that are all time greats like Fallout, StarCraft, Witcher 3 and Half Life, and FreeSpace 2 belongs on that list without the shadow of a doubt. I still absolutely love this game, and it's right up there with Need For Speed III, Elite: Dangerous, and Destiny 2 in terms of number of hours played. Go grab it on GOG.com, install it, and download the Knossos installer to easily download the Source Code Project and Freespace Upgrade Project modules needed to make it work well on modern systems. I was so incredibly hyped, and this game lived up to and exceeded all of my expectations. I bought the game from a Future Shop in Winnipeg, back when that was one of the best places in Winnipeg to buy new release software. I remember the excitement I felt leading up to the demo, playing the demo, then waiting until the game was released a full month ahead of schedule. The developers engaged heavily with the community, and shared a lot of the progress with the fans. The Volition Bulletin Board was the first online community I was ever a part of, and it lead to me going to a spin-off semi-private forum that then led me to Ars Technica (I think that Scythe kept talking about it). It has officially been twenty years since arguably the last great single-player space-combat game was released.
